Ticket Prices Are Rising in Theatres... But Where Are the Facilities?

  - A Growing Burden on Audiences – What Happened to Theatre Owners’ Responsibility?

Cinema is more than just entertainment for Telugu people; it is an emotion. Watching a movie in a theatre with family has always been a cherished experience. However, that experience is increasingly becoming expensive and disappointing for many moviegoers. A ticket that once cost ₹50 to ₹100 now ranges from ₹250 to ₹350, and in some cases even more.

The concern is not just about rising ticket prices. The bigger question is whether theatres are providing facilities that justify these costs. Across the Telugu states, audiences are raising concerns about the declining quality of services in many theatres.

Rising Ticket Prices

Today, ticket prices in multiplexes commonly range between ₹300 and ₹500. During the release of big-budget films, prices often climb even higher. For a middle-class family of four, a trip to the movies can easily cost over ₹1,000 just for tickets.

When parking fees, food and beverages, and other expenses are added, watching a movie has become an increasingly expensive form of entertainment.

Facilities Falling Short

Despite the high ticket prices, many theatres fail to provide adequate facilities and services.

Air Conditioning Issues

During the summer months, audiences frequently complain that air-conditioning systems are not functioning properly. Spending three hours in an uncomfortable, warm environment can significantly diminish the movie-going experience.

Poor Washroom Maintenance

Many theatres struggle to maintain clean and hygienic restrooms. In some cases, even basic amenities such as clean drinking water are unavailable. Families, women, children, and senior citizens often face considerable inconvenience.

Poor Seating Conditions

Damaged seats, worn-out cushions, and insufficient legroom are common complaints in several theatres. While ticket prices continue to rise, improvements in seating comfort have not kept pace.

Sound and Projection Quality Concerns

In some theatres, sound systems and projection quality fail to meet audience expectations. Moviegoers pay for an immersive cinematic experience, and compromising on technical quality undermines that expectation.

The ‘Corporate Habit’ Strategy?

A common business strategy is to first attract customers with a superior experience and then gradually increase prices once customers become accustomed to the service. Critics argue that a similar trend may be emerging in the cinema industry.

Multiplex culture introduced audiences to a premium movie-viewing experience. However, many viewers now feel that while prices continue to increase, service quality is not improving proportionately.

Do Audiences Have the Right to Question?

A moviegoer who purchases a ticket is a consumer. As consumers, audiences have every right to demand quality services and facilities.

Yet many hesitate to file complaints because they are unsure where to report issues, whether action will be taken, or whether their concerns will be addressed.

It is important for audiences to understand that they fall under consumer protection rights. If theatres fail to provide promised services, consumers can approach the relevant authorities or consumer forums for redressal.

Need for Government Oversight

Regular inspections should be conducted to ensure compliance with standards related to safety, cleanliness, air conditioning, seating arrangements, drinking water, and parking facilities.

If governments permit increases in ticket prices, they must also ensure that theatres maintain service standards that justify those prices.

The Film Industry Must Reflect

Film producers and distributors frequently express concern that audiences are increasingly choosing OTT platforms over theatre visits.

One major reason is the growing imbalance between cost and experience. When viewers can enjoy high-quality content at home for a fraction of the cost, many are reluctant to spend heavily on a theatre experience that often falls short of expectations.

The Audience Is the Industry’s Strength

Moviegoers are not merely ticket buyers; they are the foundation of the film industry. Bringing audiences back to theatres requires more than star power and big-budget productions. It requires a comfortable, respectful, and satisfying viewing experience.

A person paying ₹350 for a movie ticket deserves a cool and comfortable environment, clean washrooms, quality seating, and excellent audio-visual presentation. Without these essentials, the so-called “theatre experience” risks becoming nothing more than a marketing slogan.

Theatre owners must recognize the value of their customers’ money and respond to their concerns with accountability. At the same time, audiences must exercise their right to demand better services.

“Increasing ticket prices is easy. Earning and retaining the audience’s trust is the real challenge.”
